Language and literature are the main elements of German Studies which covers sources and examples of modern language – Modern German Studies, but also the earlier forms like Gothic Old High German, Old German Studies and Middle High German. Literature Studies covers the different branches of the academic treatment of literary texts. The field of General Literature Studies is an aesthetic discipline concerned with different theories on interpretation, identification and organizing of general structures of literature. German Studies Programmes are focused in providing a thorough knowledge of the development of the German Language and their key trends which are there German Literature.

In Magister degree courses, candidates may choose a branch of German Studies as majors and in most cases as two minors. Bachelor’s degree often includes a core German Studies Subject or in many cases a complementary academic subject from Cultural or Social Sciences.
